The Rebirth of Coventry CathedralSir Basil Spense
An original railway poster promoting trips to Coventry to see the newly rebuilt cathedral, 1961. The design features a 1957 watercolour of St Michael’s cathedral by the architect Sir Basil Urwin Spence. The new cathedral, which replaced the medieval structure destroyed during the Second World War, adopted a modernist design, with interior fittings by Graham Sutherland, John Bridgeman and John Piper (among others). This exterior view shows the sculpture of St Michael's Victory over the Devil by Jacob Epstein. The poster was published with different text banners at the base, and its notable that in this version British Railways has allowed one of its regions to style itself 'the London Midland Railway' - a very 'off message' branding for the nationalised rail network.
