An exceptional, and rare, original poster for Welwyn Garden City by Freda Beard. Welwyn was a new ‘garden city’ residential development founded by Sir Ebenezer Howard in Hertfordshire. The accompanying poster campaign (displayed at railway stations) was aimed at Londoners seeking to escape the dirt and grime of the city for the fresh air and sunshine of the new town. A successful commercial artist and portrait painter, Beard designed several posters for London Underground, the British Empire Exhibition and the Royal Mail Line in the 1920s.
