An original, vintage, theatre poster for the Berliner Ensemble’s production of Optimistische Tragodie (Optimistic Tragedy) written by Vsevolod Vishnevskiy in 1933 and set in St. Petersburg and Kronstadt during the Russian Civil War. The poster features a superb design by leading Russian avant-garde artist, illustrator, and cartoonist Vladimir Vasilyevich Lebedev (Russian: Влади́мир Васи́льевич Ле́бедев), who was especially noted for his pioneering work in children's illustration. The Berliner Ensemble is a German theatre company established by actress Helene Weigel and her husband, playwright Bertolt Brecht, in 1949. A higher resolution image is available to view on request.
