Proud City. St Pauls
Walter SpradberySpradbery was commissioned by London Transport in 1944 to design a set of six morale-boosting posters showing that London (and Londoners) stood defiant in the face of Nazi bombing campaigns. Entitled ‘The Proud City’, the series was hugely popular, and reprinted for worldwide distribution by the Ministry of Information. The image of St Paul’s was regarded as the most successful. This very rare survivor was printed for the American market. For full details see: Bownes & Green, London Transport Posters (2008), pp.184-5.
