Original British Transport Commission poster showing the wide range of ships operated by the BTC in the mid-1950s. Many of these had previously been owned by the independent railway companies prior to nationalisation in 1948. The fleet included passenger ferries from Irish Sea, cross-Channel and North Sea services, as well as smaller vessels that served the Isle of Wight, Skye, Humber and Solent, and some tourist vessels such as the MV Swan which still operates on Lake Windermere today. The link with mainline railways is echoed by the inclusion of a steam hauled passenger train at the pier-head in the background. Very unusually, this poster is printed in ‘Four Sheet’ size (60 x 40 inches) rather than the more common Quad Royal (50 x 40 inches). A higher resolution image is available for viewing on request.
