Panorama of central London from New Zealand House, Richard Downer, c. 1960.
Richard DownerAn original panorama of central London from New Zealand House, drawn and published by Richard Downer, c. 1960.
The meticulously detailed drawing depicts Oceanic House and Trafalgar Square in the central foreground, with the Houses of Parliament to the right and St Paul’s Cathedral on the horizon (left). The drawing includes several now demolished or changed streetscapes, such as the area around the modern-day Warwick House Street (foreground, right).
The drawing predates a similar illustration that Downer published in 1965, although we have not seen this version before.
Downer worked as a design consultant and illustrator for over 40 years. He is probably best remembered today for the distinctive series of covers he designed for BT telephone directories between 1967-1985. He was also well known for his panoramas of central London, which included a 360° panoramic drawing for the BT Tower (1970-1973).
