An original, and rare, General Poster Office poster illustrating the Underground Mail Train (London), designed by Lili Réthi (1894-1969). The underground Post Office Railway was built by the Post Office with assistance from London Underground, to transport mail between sorting offices. It opened in 1927 and operated for 76 years until 2003. Lili Réthi was an accomplished Austrian artist and illustrator, who fled Nazi Germany in the late 1930s. After briefly living and working in London, she emigrated to the USA and eventually became an American citizen. Examples of her work are held in public collections in the USA and UK.
