A charming original poster from the earliest days of UK coach tours. The image shows an open-top ‘charabanc’ touring bus, with the two drivers (resplendent in white coats) enjoying a quiet fag while their passengers wander off to inspect a local beauty spot. At this date, coach tours were arranged by intrepid entrepreneurs with tickets sold through local agents, such as the London-based music publisher Keith, Prowse & Co (as shown here). This poster advertises tours from London to Devon, Cornwall, the Lake District, Wales, Yorkshire and Scotland – long and uncomfortable journeys at a time when the average charabanc could only manage a maximum speed of 30 mph.
