An original, hanging, ‘Curwen’s Modulator’ – a tonic sol-fa modulator teaching aid, dating from the early twentieth century. Based on a system of music education created by Sarah Ann Glover, and popularised by the Reverend John Curwen (1816-1880), the tonic sol-fa system revolutionised the teaching of sight-singing and is still used today. Curwen publicised his teaching methods through a series of publications and a periodical, which led to the establishment of J. Curwen & Sons publishing firm in 1863. This firm continued as the Curwen Press into the 1970s. A genuinely significant piece of British social history. Retains original ebonised rollers.
