The Cruel Sea
S. John WoodsAn unusual, and rare, original Ealing Studios film poster, The Cruel Sea, designed by S. John Woods, 1953. The design features a photograph of the actor Denholm Elliott in the role of Sub-Lieutenant Morell. The film, set during the Second World War, was based on the former naval officer Nicholas Monsarrat's bestselling novel. Directed by Charles Frend, the film starred Jack Hawkins, Donald Sinden, Denholm Elliott, Stanley Baker, Liam Redmond, Virginia McKenna and Moira Lister.
Ealing Studios became well-known during the 1940s and 50s for its ambitions and inventive approach to poster design. The in-house advertising department was headed by S. John Woods (a formidable graphic designer in his own right) and often invited contemporary artists and designers to create posters for their films.
