Fountains Abbey
Henry RushburyA first-rate railway poster, Fountains Abbey, by the English fine artist Henry Rushbury RA, c. 1935. The design, personally lithographed by Rushbury, shows the ruined church at Fountains Abbey in muted tones, above the message Travel by Rail to Ripon station (which is flanked by the Eric Gill-designed LNER lozenge logo).
Rushbury was one of the twentieth century’s finest artists of architectural subjects. The detail achieved in this poster is extraordinary, as is the sense of place conveyed by expert shading and dramatic lighting.
This poster was reissued by British Railways after the Second World War, but this example is an original first printing.
