Original wartime colour lithograph, The Raider in the Moors, by Paul Nash. Published by the National Gallery for the Ministry of Information. Printed by the Curwen Press, 1940.

One of the most influential British artist-designers of the twentieth century, Paul Nash (1889-1946) was working as a full-time salaried war artist attached to the Royal Air Force and the Air Ministry when he undertook this work. The print, part of series by Nash showing downed German aircraft, depicts a Heinkel He111 bomber shot down by RAF Spitfires from 602 and 603 Squadrons on 28th October 1939. The plane crashed in the Lammermuir Hills of Scotland and is sometimes referred to as the ‘Humbie Heinkel’ after the nearby Scottish hamlet. It was the first German plane officially shot down on the British mainland during the Second World War.

The reverse is printed with details of publication. Signed in the plate.
