Private Eye 100th Issue (1965)
Barry Ernest FantoniOriginal promotional poster for the 100th Issue of the British satirical magazine, Private Eye, designed by Barry Ernest Fantoni, 1965. This actual copy was displayed near the offices of Private Eye in Soho at the time and was removed from the wall as a souvenir. The weather beaten and torn poster features contemporary graffiti, including “J Rushton Design Consultant, Knock and Enter”, which could be a reference to the Eye’s co-founder, cartoonist, comedian, actor and satirist, Willie Rushton (1937 – 1996). Other graffiti advises students (or possibly Student Entertainment officers, ‘Stud Ents’) to ‘Go Home’.
A very rare poster indeed, and a tangible link to the satire boom of mid-60s London.
