The striking artwork depicts the Irish Mail (a famous ‘named train’) emerging from Stephenson’s Britannia Bridge connecting Anglesey with the north Wales mainland. The train is hauled by a Royal Scot Class steam locomotive, flanked by the huge stone lions guarding the entrance to the bridge, while the treacherous waters of the Menai Straits whirl below.

This poster was later reissued by British Railways to mark the centenary of the Irish Mail route to Ireland via Holyhead and Don Laoghaire in 1950. This example, however, is the very rare first edition issued by the LMS in the early 1930s.
