The design uses the colours of the Tube map imposed on an elongated world map to reflect the diversity of London and the users of London Underground. The background map is based on the Peters Projection (1974), which portrays each country according to its true surface area.

Original promotional Tube map poster, Global Underground, designed by Yinka Shonibare, published by Transport for London, 2006. This map was originally commissioned by Platform for Art (the art programme for London Underground) as the cover of the London Underground pocket tube map from 4 June 2006 – 31 December 2006.
