Original lithographic print, Industrial Landscape, Käthe Strenitz (1923–2017), Artist’s Proof, 1968.

Born in Czechoslovakia, Strenitz fled to London in 1939 to escape Nazi persecution. She was awarded a British Council Scholarship to the Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art on the recommendation of Oskar Kokoschka, and later became known for her grimy depictions of London, especially the area around Camden and King’s Cross where her husband had a factory. The exact location of the scene depicted in this print is unknown but is likely to be in the vicinity of King’s Cross/Islington, and is typical of several prints she made during this period. In a 2005 interview, Strenitz said of her work:

“I was always interested in the decline of the industrial scene and when my husband started a factory… I had an ideal place from where to work, so I tried to record as much of the neighbourhood as I could which included the canal, railway and the general landscape around King's Cross”

Examples of Strenitz’ work are held in several permanent UK collections, including Ben Uri Gallery & Museum and the Guildhall Art Gallery.
